DANEJA MENTALE "WISH" [INTERNET SINGLE]

"Wish" is a dedication to Daneja's late aunt Vera Foster. The song was written and recorded in just 2 days after her death. This is the most emotional song Daneja Mentale has ever done. As she is described as his "2nd mother", he also reveals the she was also his biggest supporter, even though she hated rap music.

Both tracks were taken from "Listen Closely Vol. 2: The Art of Expression"

QUAD CONTROL STATION -"THE BLACK TAPE"... REVISTED

QCS' 1994 "Black Tape" EP was produced in one week (actually in 5 days). Before the sonic eurosounds of "Bass Xpo 2001"; the "Black Tape" was full of samples from various sources. With styles ranging from Afrika Bambatta, Kraftwerk, and the Miami sound, the "Black Tape" satisfies listeners. In 2007 DJ DMT (Daneja Mentale... DUH!) decided to re-vamp and remix the EP. DMT chose to do so after he loaned the original demo to a close friend, who passed away before he was able to get it back. In a way, this album is more like Limp Bizkit's "New Old Songs" but without the rap vocals.

SOUL MAFIA FAMILY MEMBER: GABE HOLLAND aka LORD OF BEATZ

Before Def For Life was founded, Gabe Holland had many names in the industry. When Daneja met him in 1993 he was known as Ace G. then he became (gulp! he's gonna kill me for this...) Cisco Kid, Thank God that didn't last long. Then came Quicksilver. No matter what he was in the past, nothing stood out better than Lord of Beatz. Koalishun gave Gabe that name mainly because at the time his long hair made him look like a picture of Jesus. To top that title off, he did bring the gospel to the beat. He and Daneja started Def For Life Records in May 1994. Having already produced tracks for Koalishun, Daneja, Naive (now known as The True), and many other Hip-Hop acts; he decided to move onto different genres. One of these moves made a member of Rock groups Jones Ave., San Francisco Blue with Jefferson Airplane's Bob Harvey, Superczar, and The Sixes. Not the one to forget from whence he came, Gabe is now working on his first Hip-Hop project since 1995.

DANEJA MENTALE "TRUTH & CONSEQUNCES"

Followed by Renegunn's "199Gunn", Daneja Mentale's "Truth & Consequences" is an uneven project. Due to the restrictions of a local studio, the album suffers from the lack of energy in the songs. Truth be told, Daneja recorded this album after Renegunn was "banned" from the same studio for their use of profanity. Actually... that's far from the truth. Only a few Renegunn members know the REAL reason. Anyway, Daneja sought out to record this album for the first time without the use of a 4-track recorder (some tracks were still recorded at home). The studio's owner allowed Daneja to record despite the fact that he said he would no longer do so. This didn't go so well with KD LMR and the rest of Renegunn. First the single "44 DM" was recorded there, and next profanity was on the album. Gabe Holland shows up on "Easy Way Out". Now... here is where the drama starts. KD hears a rumor leading to the speculation that "Easy Way Out" was directed toward him. Daneja denied all accusations, but didn't convince KD. So he directs a diss toward Daneja, Gabe, P.O.T.Y. (funny fact: P.O.T.Y. is KD's cousin), and Omega Red (original Renegunn member). Daneja tried to make peace but was hit with another diss. That diss led to the infamous "Vendetta" where no prisoners are taken (except for Cosmo, who remained neutral during the beef). That moment had become the most hostile for both rappers (they once had beef in 1995. hence "9 Livez"). Other noteworthy tracks are: "Blind" and "Voice & Valuables" which are more positive in content. This is the track listing for the original pressing with silence from tracks 23 to 42. The reissue placed "Vendetta" 30 seconds after "Outro" and the infamous "When Haters Call" skit is omitted.

SOUL MAFIA FAMILY MEMBER: SPARQKLIPZ

Although not a Def For Life artist, Sparqklipz has been a loyal member of Soul Mafia since 2005. Producer Exel linked up with Daneja Mentale on SoundClick dot com after hearing his music. Later that year Exel introduced Daneja to Sparqklipz and instantly started networking. Sparqklipz recieved production from Daneja for his debut album "Foriegn Language". These are some of Sparqklipz's Daneja Mentale-produced work.

  • Masterpiece (from "Foriegn Language")
  • As Live As It Gets (remix) (from "As Live as It Gets")
  • No Apologies (from "Dark Waters")
  • All For The Good (Get Money) (from "Listen Closely Vol. 1: Rhymes & Beats")

SYKO-RAH "THE REBIRTH"

"The Rebirth" is Syko-Rah's official Def For Life Records debut. This time around Syko decides to take the Golden Age route. With production by newcomer Brett Life, Syko make a remarkable comeback. Nobody has ever sounded so New York in the south since Scarface's classic "The Fix". "The Rebirth" is full of gems. There's hardly a fast-forward moment here. From the hilarious "Swingin'" to the socially-conscious "Rushing", this album is full of hits. Daneja also lends production to the sequel to "Caddy Coupe Song". However the sad part is... many people overlooked this solid release. As Crunk and Snap rap music dominated the charts, some complained about the album saying that it was too "Hip-Hop". WTF???! (isn't rap a part of Hip-Hop)? Despite the backlash "The Rebirth" is a brilliant album.

Tracks:
  1. INTRO
  2. HENNESSEY & HOLY WATER

QUAD CONTROL STATION -"NEW QUAD ORDER"

Well... What can I say about Quad Control Station's "New Quad Order"? ...uh ... Daneja Mentale messed up somewhere on this one. Thank God that he made up for it on "Vol. 3"! Anyway... "New Quad Order" does has some gems despite the backlash. "Prepare 4 Liftoff", "Let It Fall", Split Atoms", "Tranceformer" (part 2) and "Make It Smooth" are the tracks to check out on this project.

SYKO-RAH "POLITICAL PRISONER"

Syko-Rah's second album "Political Prisoner" became the first of the many collaborations with Daneja Mentale. With "Throw It Up" as the lead single, "Political Prisoner" became Syko-Rah's best selling album to date. Other tracks such as the Pito Untamed-produced "Someday" displays a positive moment for the project. Daneja produces 3 more tracks and Pito Untamed produces one more. Though not an official Def For Life release, Syko shines with the rest of the Soul Mafia Family. For those who heard the debut album "Georgiarican" may feel that this may be a step up for Syko. Others may feel that this was a departure from his earlier sound. The content of the lyrics may be the case for that thought. This album is more profanity-laced than his debut. However, that doesn't mean that it doesn't entertain. If fact, this is one of the best albums to come out of Columbus, Ga. The album also includes two hidden tracks: "Say Hello" and the Pastor Troy diss "Augusta Busta"

Tracks:
  1. THE JUDGEMENT
  2. POLITICAL PRISONER
  3. THROW IT UP
  4. SOMEDAY
  5. WKUT RADIO (skit)
  6. KUT SUMPN'

DANEJA MENTALE "ELEMENTS OF LIFE"

Right on the heels of "Truth & Consequences"; 2002's "Elements Of Life" was originally intended Daneja's double album. However, that's not why you see the two opposite covers. The first cover was the original idea but was changed at the last minute (actually there are two more covers for this album). Anyway... enough about the cover art. Let's talk about the music. The album starts off with the socially-conscious "Intro" where he talks about life and death in one verse. Speaking of which... "Elements Of Life" is filled with references of life and death with a yin-yang effect. Some of that can be found on tracks such as "Elements Of Life (Confession)" the "dedication" version is in fact about the death of two loved ones. "Plasma" is a reflection of the past while "Whoever" is a glimpse into a dark future. When he decides not to focus on the living/dying subject matter, Daneja rips emcees, expose producers, and tells vivid stories. The production is sometimes dark and unpredictable, but makes a good listen.

Tracks:

  1. INTRO
  2. MADDNIFICENT
  3. ELEMENTS OF LIFE (Confession)
  4. PRODUCERS
  5. Y'ALL DON'T KNOW ME
  6. THAT'S WHO I AM
  7. MR. DANEJA
  8. NO APOLOGIES (1)
  9. BETRAYAL
  10. AKSHUNZ N WORDZ
  11. PLASMA
  12. MONEY
  13. NO APOLOGIES (2)
  14. SO
  15. FRIENDS '03
  16. WHOEVER (Gave a ****)
  17. IF I DIE TONIGHT
  18. ELEMENTS OF LIFE (Dedication)

KD LMR "GEORGIA MOTTO"

"Georgia Motto" became one of the many single releases by KD LMR. The 4-song maxi-single featured production by Gabe Holland, Daneja Mentale and Black Olive Productions. The title track was recorded with guests Kristle and Mr. Muhammad (formally P.O.T.Y. of Renegunn) The radio remix features rapper Carmen, replacing Kristle's profanity-laced verse. Swift is featured on the Latin-laced "Espaniol Mosca" and steals the show with his bi-lingual verse. Gabe's father Jimmy Holland plays the trumpet on here as well. Everything sounds on point until "Who Am I?" starts playing. The Daneja Mentale-produced track is the weirdest of all ever produced for KD. The ice cream truck sample is the most annoying thing Daneja has ever produced. Even the scratching fails to help this song become listenable. However 3 songs out of 4 isn't bad at all.
Tracks:
  1. GEORGIA MOTTO (Explicit)
  2. ESPANIOL MOSCA (Explicit)
  3. WHO AM I? (Explicit)
  4. GEORGIA MOTTO REMIX (Radio)

KD LMR "THE LIGHT ALBUM"/"FOOD FOR THOUGHT, CAKE FOR DESSERT"

Just in case if you're wondering about the dual cover (or not) I'll tell you about it. KD LMR's official debut remains to be released. Def For Life Records have seen idea after idea from this artist. the unreleased albums include: 1994's "Ask The Dread" (he wore dreadlocks at the time), and 1997's "Finished What I Started" (interesting title), and 199?'s "Kane Devin Chronicles". However, there's nothing different about these two albums above except for the covers. "The Light Album" (originally entitled "The Freshman Album") was rwecorded and was to be released in 2003 but was cut short due to KD's relocation (he moved to Texas then to Cumming, Ga.). Fast foward to 2006... same album... new artwork... new title. "Food For Thought, Cake For Dessert" was released... well... sorta. Since the recording of this project KD has worked with Daneja Mentale on 2006's "Home Is Where The Hate Is". He also recorded new material for Daneja's new album "Listen Closely". Hopefully we'll get to hear a full album of new material from KD this year.
Tracks:
  1. FUTURISTIC
  2. SKIT
  3. EXXXTASY
  4. REVERSIN' HUSTLE (feat. Moe Arsonis)
  5. DROP (feat. Kristle & Heavyweight)

DANEJA MENTALE "HOME IS WHERE THE HATE IS"

RE-UP

I wondered to myself how could Daneja create a follow up to"Dark Waters". The 12 track EP (14 if you count the skit and bonus remix) "Home Is Where The Hate Is" became an instant classic. "Dark Waters" was originally intended to be the nail in coffin for Daneja Mentale. That was to be until a former Warner Brothers-signed artist critisized him for sounding "local". This, resulted in the Red Diamond/Tony Mercedes diss "Local Talent". Mercedes, a former record producer (Duice, Pressha) balked at the fact Daneja used the Friuty Loops music production software for his beats. He also didn't plan to pay for the production until it was re-produced by a professional or another producer. Daneja along with Columbus, Ga. rapper Syko-Rah refused to deal with the ridicule. However they did decide to give Diamond another try. After remixing the track, it was taken to a local recording studio for vocals. After the session Syko was informed after a week that the track couldn't be used on Diamond's debut album "Grimey" (that s*** wasn't coming out anyway). Instead of telling the truth, Diamond claimed that the engineer had to "add" another snare to the mix. This resulted in Daneja severing ties with both Red Diamond and Tony Mercedes. This explains the anger that feuls the vocals on "Local Talent". This became Daneja's best album to date. Without many guest apperences and time length spanning less than a hour, the album proves a point. Four other tracks display a more bitter side of Daneja. You'll hear that bitterness on this album.

Tracks:
  1. THE HOOD
  2. LOCAL TALENT
  3. D-SCHOCCZ'S MESSAGE (skit) (feat. D-Shoccz)
  4. ONE
  5. ALL THE WAY

RENEGUNN - "199Gunn"

The 1997 release of "199Gunn" serves as a "What the @%*!" moment for many reasons. First the name of the group and album title... original, yes; catchy... no. Next the number of members... 9 (do I hear Wu-Tang Clan somewhere)? However the music was different, especially for a rap group from the Dirty South. Before OutKast confused the world with the Grammy-winning "Speakerboxx/The Love Below", Lord of Beats and Daneja Mentale produced "199Gunn"... zzzz. Yes a sleeper, but still had some good moments. "Galaxy", "4 Horsemen" and the title track are worth listening. This album... my bad... EP was plagued by heated tensions within the group. Even the two producers displayed tension toward each other. Hint: "Galaxy" displays this fact. as the story goes, the song was to have a session drummer playing along with the drum machine. Daneja disapproved it due to another track having the same idea ("Make 'Em Clap"). The drummer seemed to have more of a voice in the argument until Daneja mixed the drums almost out of the mix. Not to be outdone, Lord of Beats mixed Daneja vocals so low that only the ablibs make the verse audible. This may explain why they haven't done another album together. Lord of Beats' vocals only appears on "Galaxy" while KD LMR and Laytex's vocal can be heard on the whole project (another what the @%*! moment). Swift leaves the fold after recording his verse on "In The Wind". Later that year, others follwed suit. The end.

Tracks:
  1. 199GUNN
  2. SOUTHSIDE
  3. GALAXY
  4. MAKE 'EM CLAP

Originally entitled "Da Awakening" in 1995, "185ivers" is a collection from "Da Awakening" recording sessions and various loose tracks.
